Hit Club Records

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Manchester based label Hit Club records, put simply, are bang on it..Cool website, cool bands, cool logo. Only Founded in late 2009, with the release of Wolf Gang’s brilliant 2nd single ‘The King And All His Men’ This disco pop masterpiece should have been massive, and will probably be un – earthed in years to come. The 2nd release on Hit Club was Is Tropical’s  ‘When O’ When’ which sold out within a week, and set the band up touring with The Big Pink and New Young Pony Club straight after its release, so Hit Club clearly aspire to be the ‘Hit Makers’. And with the release of much hyped Egyptian Hip Hop’s debut single soon, it’ sure as hell gonna kick off for this lot soon.. The only thing that lets them down on the whole is the god awful motto “Sexy sounds for successful people” But we will forgive them that.

We Have Band

Monday, March 29th, 2010

We Have Band are Darren Bancroft (vocals, drums, percussion, sampler), Dede W-P (vocals, percussion, sampler) and husband Thomas W-P (vocals, guitar, bass, programming). They are a do-it-yourself trio who encompass the grooves of Talking Heads and the best bits of Hot Chip. They all live in London.

Having spent most of last year touring the world and the rest of the time in the studio with producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, These New Puritans), the band who won Glastonbury Festival’s 2009 Emerging Talent Contest and are now hoping to prove the critics right with their first album this spring. They will release their debut album WHB on April 5th 2010. The lead single Divisive is out on March 22nd 2010.

Drawing from a well of influences that include ESG, Animal Collective and The Rapture, the band created their own sound – a 21st Century mixtape that defies categorisation or pigeonholing. With the prime focus on making people dance, they quickly took the big step of taking their music to the stage, despite having little to no previous experience between them. “We learnt quickly” says Dede, “I never thought I’d be in a band, I definitely didn’t ever see myself on a stage! But after the first few shows you get over the scary bit and the buzz just took over – there was no looking back.”

‘The snowball effect’ is a fitting description for the band’s first year; play a few shows in London, play a few more outside of London, start getting a lot more hits on MySpace, NME and Dazed & Confused get in touch about doing ‘ones to watch’ features, label’s start calling and before you know it they have their first release.

The Toes

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Formed in the latter part of the nineties, The Toes, played many a sweaty London gig & Sonic Mook events, plus featured two of the Sonic Mook Experiment albums.
With acclaimed EPs & an album released on Cornershop label Meccico, they were tipped by many press publication & radio alike, but then split in early 2000.
Now after a eight year holiday, they have reformed with a new album slated, plus live shows. They’re set to bring their rambling rocking blues sound back to the people

Vic Godard & Subway Sect

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

In 1976, Godard formed Subway Sect with three other fans of the Sex Pistols at the suggestion of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, who wanted another band for the line-up of the 100 Club Punk Festival. Despite their inexperience, Subway Sect made a successful debut at the festival. They appeared with The Clash on the White Riot Tour in 1977 and released their debut single, Nobody’s Scared’ / ‘Dont Split It’, in March 1978. While recording their debut album at Gooseberry Studios, the band’s manager Bernie Rhodes suddenly fired the entire band except for Godard. Only one track from the album’s recording sessions, Ambition, was released by Rough Trade records; the single was a major hit on the alternative charts.

Godard re-formed Subway Sect in 1980 with new musicians and released the album What’s The Matter Boy? Following a summer tour with Buzzcocks, Subway Sect disbanded again. Guitarist Johnny Britten formed a rockabilly band but was soon forced to leave the group, at which point Godard stepped in to take his place. They recorded the album Songs For Sale in 1981, but were disappointed with the results and disbanded soon after. Godard also recorded an LP at Olympic Studios, called T.R.O.U.B.L.E., with a group of London jazz musicians known as Working Week, which was eventually released two years later by Rough Trade Records.

In the mid-1980s, Godard took a brief hiatus from music and became a postman.

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Comanechi are a duo from London, UK featuring singer and drummer Akiko Matsuura and guitarist Simon Petrovitch. Akiko belting out train crash drumming while singing like an orgasmic out of control release, Petrovitch provides bowel loosening brutally heavy guitar riffs from behind his low slung fringe of hair. Shows with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Klaxons, The Gossip, Coachwhips, Les Georges Leningrad, Hunches, Jackie -O Mother Fucker. Massively energetic and entertaining Japanese tinged post punk.

The Long March

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Stood shouting into each others ears on the edge of the dance floor on the opening night of Sound Control in mid-December, someone gets a text…”Casinos have pulled out of Saturday nights gig at night and day”….”shall we do it?”….”yeh defo”. At that point we realised we were going to have to pull our fingers out, and we did..just..

After scraping a set together for our first gig that night at Council Pop with Orphan Boy, Heartbreaks and Rum Diamond, we’ve been hard at it. New drummer, new rehearsal room, new year, new start. We’ve rehearsed and polished the fuck out of old and new songs…and now we’re ready.

Dark Horses

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

One thing we know is that it begins with the source…LISA ELLE the exterminating angel, the Swedish sonic siren…How many sailors will deliriously drown mistaking her voice for safe harbour?

On her nocturnal dérive’s along the shores of Seagull City, SHE finds such like; FIVE drowned LEATHER boys, shivering under the pier. Nourishing them with spells and drones and words and melodies, she baptizes them DARK HORSES.

Next thing we know DARK HORSES are snowed up in Chicago’s Key Club studio’s sharing beds with THE KILLS. In the control room at SLY STONE’s mixing desk proffer’s the mighty Richard FEARLESS (Death In Vegas / Black Acid), recording their debut long player, in the vocal booth KASABIAN’s Tom Meighan adds vocals.
