autoKratz

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

autoKratz are the London based duo, inspired by Daft Punk, Kraftwerk and Underworld, who have enjoyed success through remixes for Underworld, Fischerspooner and La Roux and live tours alongside the likes of Digitalism and Underworld.

Since first storming onto the scene last year, autoKratz have swiftly established a reputation for their distinctly different releases which harbour infectious bass hooks, addictive vocals and compulsive beats & bleeps. The band have so far received immense support from across the board, finding spots on the playlists of Pete Tong, Annie Mac and Steve Lamacq, whilst receiving club support from the likes of Tiga, Erol Alkan and Brodinski.

Their formidable live shows across the globe have seen them become one of the most sought after breakthrough prospects in electronic music, with the band enjoying ecstatic responses at festivals across Europe including Glastonbury, Lowlands & Pukkelpop.

The autoKratz set combines their trademark rock and roll energy with their remarkably distinctive electro sound; a recipe which has seen them touted as the most significant live electronic act to have emerged in recent years.

June 22nd 09 will see autoKratz release their highly anticipated debut album ‘ANIMAL’, a record which will see them state their undeniable claim to joining the royalty of electronic music. This extremely significant LP follows the success of autumn 2008’s acclaimed mini album ‘Down & Out In Paris & London’ and looks set to solidify the bands position as one of Europe’s most exciting new prospects. autoKratz begin the campaign by unleashing a razor sharp cover of Primal Scream’s Swastika Eyes, a live favourite and a version that both Mani & Bobby Gillespie have got extremely excited about, and given their full support to.

This 11 track album will be released on pioneering Parisian label Kitsune (Digitalism, Klaxons & Simian Mobile Disco), a stable in which David and Russell autoKratz have found themselves very much at home. ‘Animal’ will be supported by a single release – that of the massive ‘Always More’ (with dancefloor smashing remixes coming from Yuksek & Shadow Dancer). The album includes the infectious summer anthem ‘Stay The Same’, the driving and relentless ‘Can’t Get Enough’ and the epic ‘Speak In Silence’, all combining to create a remarkable collection of tracks with variety and depth, justifying the bands standing as the flag bearers of the new wave of British electronic music.

With ‘Animal’, autoKratz have undoubtedly embarked on an ascension to prominence that “will nudge them into the big league” NME.

TODDLA T & MC SEROCEE

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

23 year-old Tom Bell, aka. Toddla T, to a lanky streak of gabbling enthusiasm, through 2008, Toddla’s Fill Up Mi Portion, Soundtape Killin’ and Manabadman singles, not to mention his brilliant Ghettoblaster No.1 mixtape download, announced him as British dance music’s brightest new talent. Britain hasn’t heard party music this raw and vibrant since early Basement Jaxx. “I was conscious people might find it a bit ‘aggro’,” says Toddla. “But when I DJ, there’s so many girls into it. It’s mad. I thought I made boy music, but no, luckily.” Consequently, Toddla, who recently inked a long-term deal with 1965 Records, is a man in demand. His DJing schedule, which includes a monthly residency at Fabric, is packed; he’s involved in numerous side-projects, such as HervÈ and Sinden’s Machines Don’t Care collective; and, often working with his friend and studio mentor, Ross Orton (the man who reinforced MIA’s early work with Sheffield steel), TT been busy remixing the likes of Esser, Little Boots, Ladyhawke, Hot Chip and Tricky.

We Have Band

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

We Have Band are Darren Bancroft (vocals, drums, percussion, sampler), Dede W-P (vocals, percussion, sampler) and husband Thomas W-P (vocals, guitar, bass, programming). They are a do-it-yourself trio who encompass the grooves of Talking Heads and the best bits of Hot Chip. They all live in London.

Having spent most of last year touring the world and the rest of the time in the studio with producer Gareth Jones (Grizzly Bear, Interpol, Depeche Mode, These New Puritans), the band who won Glastonbury Festival’s 2009 Emerging Talent Contest and are now hoping to prove the critics right with their first album this spring. They will release their debut album WHB on April 5th 2010. The lead single Divisive is out on March 22nd 2010.

Drawing from a well of influences that include ESG, Animal Collective and The Rapture, the band created their own sound – a 21st Century mixtape that defies categorisation or pigeonholing. With the prime focus on making people dance, they quickly took the big step of taking their music to the stage, despite having little to no previous experience between them. “We learnt quickly” says Dede, “I never thought I’d be in a band, I definitely didn’t ever see myself on a stage! But after the first few shows you get over the scary bit and the buzz just took over – there was no looking back.”

‘The snowball effect’ is a fitting description for the band’s first year; play a few shows in London, play a few more outside of London, start getting a lot more hits on MySpace, NME and Dazed & Confused get in touch about doing ‘ones to watch’ features, label’s start calling and before you know it they have their first release.

Young And Lost Club

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Label of the month this month is ‘YOUNG AND LOST CLUB’ purely because they’re finally releasing Sunderbans debut single which should have come out yonks ago, except most labels just release complete shit instead.. Despite the iffy blog stories on their website (about collecting for the blue cross all day, YAWN) they’ve  released singles by the likes of Cazals, Vincent Vincent, Noah And The Whale & Loverman, the 2 girls at the heart of this operation, clearly know the the fuck is going on, which quite frankly is very rare these days.

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Now back for it’s third year, THE1234 SHOREDITCH festival returns on Saturday 24th July in Shoreditch Park.

An unforgiving bombastic shout for the new music epicureans brought to you by legendary promoter Sean McLusky. THE1234 presents the best new underground music alongside inspirational international artists, set deep in the heart of London’s most creative and cultural quarter.

“THE1234’s strength is in it’s uncompromising lineup – it would rather book the bands it loves, than include a handful of names that tick unwanted boxes – that’s how it ends up with a bill you’ll not find anywhere else.”
- Stuart Stubbs – editor of Loud And Quiet Magazine.

Sean commented, “THE1234 presents a program that always includes ‘heard them here first’ bands plus a good chunk of ‘will never hear of again’ but always vastly entertaining whatever happens. We are only interested in the sheer audacity and bluster of the Rock & Roll beast, presenting it in a truthful and raw situation, then witnessing the unstoppable scene this creates. In the 60’s it was in Chelsea, the 70’s was Noting Hill, the 80’s was Soho, the 90’s was Camden and the in the 2000’s it is SHOREDITCH. The world now looks to East London for new music.”

“THE1234 festival is not some sprawling bloated corporate bazaar; but rather an event composed wholly of a natural community of international musicians propelled by the sheer excitement of playing their music. It may be small but THE1234 festival returns to the essence of what made festivals a vital facet of the music scene: unpredictable, not corralled and controlled; raw power, not polished product, and genuine fun rather than ‘are we having fun yet?’”
- Jim Sclavunos (Grinderman/Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds)

THE1234 inaugural year saw performances from HAR MAR SUPERSTAR featuring FAB MORRETI from The Strokes, FLORENCE & THE MACHINE, LIGHT SPEED CHAMPION, THE WHIP, SHY CHILD, and last summer saw PATRICK WOOLF, THE RAKES, THE WARLOCKS, CRYSTAL FIGHTERS, HATCHAM SOCIAL, A PLACE TO BURY STARNGERS, CHROME HOOF and POLLY SCATTERGOOD play amongst many others that are still learning their craft and some that have just burned too brightly.

2010 sees a vastly improved festival set up, site infrastructure and production veering swiftly away from the (now claimed as intentional) ‘COLDITZ ‘ feel of last years production. The site will now provide; more stages, more tents, more music, more bars, more food, more stalls, more flashing lights, more entertainment, all on a Saturday at the incredible early bird ticket price of £15.

Rolo Tomassi

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Rolo Tomassi are a band from Sheffield, England. Their name is taken from the fictional character Rollo Tomasi in the film LA Confidential. The band formed in 2005 and set their local scene alight by playing a synth driven technical mix of styles and genres difficult to define in a single word.

The band self-released their first demo shortly after forming. Shortly after the band pursued a tape release via danger!laser!phaser!razor! where only 200 copies were made. After a split EP with Mirror! Mirror! the band signed to Holy Roar records after building up a reputation for a fearsome, energetic live show.

With Holy Roar the band released their self titled EP. This EP featured re-recorded songs from previous demo’s and EP’s amongst newer songs. To support this EP the band toured up and down the country numerous times, mainly supporting bigger bands such as I Was a Cub Scout and 65daysofstatic.

In June 2008, Rolo played a very well received show at Download Festival. Currently the band have signed to Hassle Records, and released their debut album, entitled ‘Hysterics’, on 22nd September 2008.
