Dead Wolf Club

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Martha is constantly knitting… Serra looks like the Honey Monster… Dead Wolf Club specialise in loudness quietness, darkness and light. These 4 sonic teenage tykes met on a plane heading for Paris and hail from Tintagel home of King Arthur and Merlin. Their songs deal with the inner struggle and turmoil of mortality and the fire we need to keep burning in order to survive, mainly through the clashing of a broken down relationship with a cherry 2000 and probing into the schizophernic mind of Philip K Dick.

Official Burnt Toast

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Whilst it’s relatively easy these days to find new things, its rare to find new things which deserve such a definition in any philosophical sense. Burnt Toast the product of Adrian Lawrence’s detour thorough his own life puts everything on trial and demands answers, newness becomes a demand and freshness the result of an artist seeking the truth. I make no apologies for such a poetic introduction there is simply is no other way to introduce a poet! But anyone yet to hear this new album would be wrong to interpret such introductions as preparing the way for difficult and obscure listening. This couldn’t be further from the truth, Adrian eloquently fuses the lethal observational skills of a Raymond Chandler detective with the subtleties and unsurpassed surgical spirits of a Martin Hannett production circa Joy Division and Section 25. The result is an infectious cocktail of American paranoia, Canadian objectivity and a very English obsession of introspection and the fly on the wall documentary….. As a bass player and founder of the Emperors New Clothes and later Gramme I share many aesthetic tastes with Burnt Toast, the love of exploring the relationship between brittle and powerful, obscurity with the warmth of an accessible sound. This album is a rarity and a wonderful celebration of an artist at the peak of their creative powers. I am proud to own a copy and believe enough to want you also to believe with me! Luke Hannam.

The Proper Ornaments

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

The Proper Ornaments make a thrillingly taut and melodic pop indebted both to the sun balm’d West Coast (the Byrds, Brian Wilson) and the driving, terse rhythms of the British Invasion and C86 pop (the Beatles, Postcard Records), centered around the close partnership of frontmen Max Clapps and James Hoare.

Their first contact was in 2005 in a West London womens’ vintage clothing store when Max was used a decoy by his then girlfriend to distract shopworker James whilst she stole accessories. Following his subsequent apprehension they found themselves arrested with a mutual appreciation of the Velvet Underground and sixties psychedelia. They
duly started writing songs together only for years of depression and intoxication to follow; over this period the two bought their own tape machine, James became homeless and Max’s wife filed for divorce.

Despite, or perhaps because of, these the duo repaired burnt bridges with former drummer Ralph Phillips in 2010 to begin playing shows, adding bassist Michael Lovett and Lets Wrestle frontman Wesley Patrick Gonzalez in 2010. They then worked with distinguished young producer Charlie Alex March to release a 7″ on San Francisco label Make A Mess Records. Cult London indie label No Pain In Pop – who had released an early single with James’ other musical project, Veronica Falls – got in touch after a gig and had the band record their debut EP over a two day period.

All signs suggest, now with one spectacular release under their belts, it’ll take more than a few high notes to tear Max and James away from each other.

Bleeding Heart Narrative

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Bleeding Heart Narrative are a London sextet who weave together beautiful sounds with a haunting intensity. As interested in textures and orchestration as they are with rhythm and melody, theirs is a distinctive and captivating style that never settles on a single genre or approach. In creating their own music, Bleeding Heart Narrative incorporate their more abstract influences into traditional song structures, applying pop sensibilities to them as they go. You might hear the shimmer of Tortoise or Steve Reich built into a song that could be played on an Arcade Fire-sized stage, or pick out a Battle-esque repetition in a Mogwai-sized crescendo – but it’ll always be Bleeding Heart Narrative you’re listening to.
