Hey guys! It’s Brandon from electrIQ Marketing, and today I’m going to show you how to do a backlink building in SEMrush.
So first you’re gonna log into SEMrush, obviously, and then you can get through this multiple ways but, let’s just go to Projects, and I’m gonna select someone who I don’t actually do backlink building for, so that I can walk you through the process.
Now, just you can either click on the project that you wanna do it for, or you can just go directly to link building proper, progress, prospects and click Setup. So I’ll click on the Projects just to take you to the full dashboard. And here you’re gonna see link building. So you wanna set it up.
Now, you’re gonna add your keywords that you’ve gotten from your SEO research that you’ve done already. You can do SEO research through a variety of tools online like Keyword Magic Tool, sorry, Keyword Finder or the Keyword Magic Tool that SEMrush offers. And these are your, these are gonna be our top ten keywords that you wanna rank for.
So, I’m just going to put in some random keywords.
So let’s say those are your top five keywords, and you can always go back and add keywords, remove keywords, change them out, whatever you wanna do.
So let’s add some competitors. Let’s just say either LA, and also gonna add food review, Los Angeles site.
Okay, The Infatuation.
So now that we added our competitors, we hit the Start Link Building and it’s going to collect and analyze the data. It takes a little bit to do this so I’m gonna move over to another client that I already have set up for this, that I actually set up last, last week. And I’ll show you how to do it from there. But in this case, you would wait and request an analyzed data and then go it’ll fill in here for you.
So, let’s go to this one.
Now you’re going to need to add a mailbox, here. It’s pretty self-explanatory; you’ll just click Add Mailbox and it’ll pop up you can choose from Google exchange a bunch of different types of emails, then you just enter user name and password and provide permission for SEMrush to send emails on your behalf, basically. So then you can email directly through the SEMrush platform.
Now, these are the total number of domain prospects, 834, coming from our keywords; 351, are coming from our competitors; and you can also add mentions as well, but we haven’t done that yet.
There, you have some information on the backlinks that you’re currently trying to build. And, these are your Monitored Domains. So once you acquire backlink, you’re gonna add them to your Monitored Domains and you can see if you lose them, if they’re broken, or they’re rejected, or if they’re active.
These are all fake. I just had added this here so you can sort of see how it looks like once you have them.
You can also suggest a widget to them, to maybe help in a group of the service a little bit. You can connect your Google Search Console, as well. You can just click on that, and I already did it but you can add a property, and it’ll bring you to this.
In order to share access, you need to copy and paste this, and add it as a user to Google Search Console. It’s pretty self-explanatory. They provide it right here, so I’m not gonna go through it, but you just add a user, make that an email, giving the proper permissions, and then you’re gonna Check Connection, and upload backlinks.
So, this is just another way to automatically mark acquired backlinks and make sure that your most important backlinks have been indexed by Google. So, I’ve already done that.
Now, let’s go on to the Prospects Tab.
So, here you’ll see all your prospects, keywords, competitors, mentions, as I said, you can add, you can take out competitors, or keywords. You can even add mentions, so you can discover backlink opportunities by typing in “brand”, “name”, and then “product”, for example, here’s their example, company “Apple”, type in “iPhone”, so any mentions of that and search will help find new backlinking opportunities for you.
And this Lost Backlinks tab, it’s not really true for this one, but this will show you any that you have lost in the past.
And here, you’ll see Rejected, where they said, now you can add them to your rejected system.
So in All Prospects, we can do some advanced filters, so you can actually select the URL type, be it a form of blog, news, review, wiki, or general. Let’s go to blog. And then you can narrow down to a specific keyword, as well.
So let’s say paper design blog and we didn’t specific .com, .you or one of the other endings. And then from here, you’re going to have all these domains down here.
So let’s say, we really like this one, we can add them to our In Progress list.
Now, another way to add is to add it with a specific outreach strategy, because you can customize your Outreach Strategies. Say, you wanna have a general one. Here’s my template for the general one for this company. But you can also have up to fifteen different ones, where there will be separate templates already populated into your outreach email for when you, when you add them.
So, let’s say you have three different ones, and for this one, you wanna do product review, so you’re gonna “add with” “product review”.
So, now, when we go to our In Progress and typically you’ll add a bunch of prospects first to the In Progress list, so that you can have a lot in here to email, but you see the Outreach Strategy underneath this one. It’s a product review. So when I click on Send Email, it pulls up the template that SEMrush uses for product reviews.
And you can change this template, obviously, so that it works for your company, and save it, and then it’ll automatically upload that for any time you specify “product review”. And you can even have follow-ups as well.
So, SEMrush actually has an email here that they’ve pulled from mockplus.com. Typically, if there’s an email here, I’ll just email this one; but a lot of the times it’ll fail so then you have to go back and actually go find the email on the website itself.
But, you would just click “send” and proceed to next and that will send out your email and then you’ll move on to the next one.
And if you go back to your prospects list, your In Progress list, sorry, you can just go through and keep looking sent. If you get a backlink from them, this is important, you wanna say you’ve acquired backlink from them and move it to the monitor list. Then we’ll move over to Monitored, and this is where you can see active, broken, lost, what SEMrush was not able to classify, to specify, and then reject it. So this will all be down in here, and you can analyze sort of how your progress is going with the ones that you’ve actually gotten now. Because getting a backlink is great but it is not great if you don’t actually keep them.
So, the last thing I wanna cover is how to actually find the email addresses. Let’s use Cosmopolitan as an example. Say you want a backlink from Cosmopolitan, that’s a pretty big, a pretty great backlink, but you’re not really sure how to go about getting it. A lot of the times you’re not gonna be able to contact someone at Cosmopolitan or they’re gonna wanna do an advertising spend it with you and the only way to get on the site is to pay for it.
But in this case, and in most cases, they will provide you with the actual author of the post. And what I like to do is just copy and paste that in, and type blog after the name.
And sometimes, they will have their own blog and that will be the first things to show up and other times is a little bit harder, but another way to even go about it is you can even reach out to them via LinkedIn.
So if I really wanted to get on Cosmopolitan or any of these other sites that she writes for, I could reach out to her directly through LinkedIn, or I can find her email, through one of these other services like Marie Claire. But the best case scenario is if they actually have their own personal blog. And so this is a bad example because she doesn’t have one, but a lot of them will.
So, to present some more example, let’s see if Colin has them.
So, he does have them. Here’s his blog, now.
Unfortunately, it does not appear to actually list his email, but you have to get creative. So you can even take his name and get his personal data. Muck Rack is pretty good with providing all the articles and information here. So be creative; you can reach out to both Twitter, LinkedIn, whatever it may be. You don’t necessarily have to email.
But that’s just if the email doesn’t go through to the initial person that you found. In a lot of the times, the emails that SEMrush actually auto-populates will be fine.
So, that is how you go about building backlinks through SEMrush. Really high level points is you want to use multiple templates, so you wanna make sure that you have custom strategies. So adding custom strategies and making sure that you’re not using the exact same template for everything.
So, when you add with, you select your Outreach Strategy, because one generic email template is not gonna work for everything. You have to tailor it to them. A small, mom and pop blog is gonna be a hell of a lot different than reaching out to Cosmopolitan or something like that, at times where you’re gonna have to get really creative and find a specific author there and try to build a relationship with them, and maybe get a backlink to their own personal blog, or potentially get on to the main site that you want to know.
But that’s really it. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below, or reach out to me.
